Brushing and Styling your Wig, Part 4

4th Feb 2015

When wearing wigs, there are many things that are similar to the way you treat your natural hair, you can sleep in it, swim with it on, and more. Brushing and styling are, for the most part, things you can do the same. The only requirement would be to manage the tools you are using on the wig to protect it from damage.

Wigs require a certain type of brush to avoid detaching the hair and breakage. We recommend using a brush with metal or wire bristles instead of synthetic or natural bristles. This will separate the hairs and detangle without pulling too much. You can also use a metal pick to help with tangles. Because brushing pulls the wig, hold the wig in place if you need to brush the hair while the wig is on your head. Only brush the wig when it is dry, never when wet.

Wigs made from synthetic hair and human hair wigs won’t stand up to the same amount of heat your natural hair will, so it’s important you take care to use the appropriate heat when needed. An alternative that won’t add any heat to your wig is to use curlers after you shampoo and condition the wig. Let the hair air dry, then take the curlers out and finish styling. Use wig specific styling products, don’t use hairsprays, mousses or other products that aren’t made for wigs.
