Properly Washing your Synthetic or Human Hair Wigs, Part 2

7th Jan 2015

In Part 1, we talked about what type of shampoo and conditioner to buy for your synthetic or human hair wigs. Here’s how to wash your wig to keep it looking nice and lasting as long as possible.

Don’t wash your hair in the shower as you would your own hair. The wig can get very tangled and not recover if washed improperly. Instead, remove the wig, gently brush out any tangles.

Never brush a wet wig. Use cold water only to wet the wig, plugging the sink and add the shampoo, gently rotating and squeezing the shampoo and water through, as if washing any other delicate clothing.

Rinse gently with cold water. Don’t wring or twist the hair. Add conditioner and gently work through, avoiding the roots. Rinse with cool water.

Turn the wig upside down in your shower and shake 3 times to get rid of any excess water, use a wire hanger to hang in your shower overnight (still upside down) and should be dry in the morning. If you need the hair dried more quickly, pat and press the hair gently to remove any excess water. Use a low setting on your hair dryer with an infuser. Especially with synthetic hair wigs, avoid high heat settings at all costs.

After it’s completely dry, you can gently comb through the wig again to separate the hair. Spray daily when wearing it with a leave-in conditioner to help it stay hydrated.

With both human and synthetic hair wigs, wash as infrequently as possible. The more washing a wig gets, the more quickly it will wear out. Also, since it’s not getting the oil from your head, it won’t get as dirty as your natural hair.
